So, the one television drama on Pakistani TVs that is actually trying to highlight a social issue that plagues us is Udaari. The show talks about child sexual abuse and how it affects children. It also discusses issues like the treatment of arts and culture in Pakistan and the role of women in our society.
For more on what we think about Udaari, click here.
PEMRA, the television regulatory body, issued a notice to the channel broadcasting ‘Udaari’ for the immoral content of the television series.
It is a sad state of affairs when a TV show that tries to tackle ills of society is called immoral by the state authorities while politicians abusing, cussing and swearing on national television is not deemed inappropriate.
Here’s what people think about the notice against Udaari
1. Like one of the makers behind the show
#Udaari #ISupportUdaari we believe in saying NO to child abuse. Thank u all for ur support @KashfFoundation pic.twitter.com/smUC0UHx1L

3. People are annoyed at the action
I can name tens of dramas, in the recent past, that glorified domestic abuse & misogyny- no action or petition against them. #ISupportUdaari

4. And they are speaking up in support of Udaari
Udaari doesn't deserve to be banned. Child abuse needs to be highlighted more than saas bahu gibberish #ISupportUdaari

5. People are appreciating that Udaari talks about actual issues instead of the soap opera fluff in other TV shows

6. There are those who want there to be actual understanding about the issue, in our society
IF you felt disgusted at the scenes, good.
THAT IS WHAT YOU WERE MEANT TO FEEL.
Shame the perpetrators not VICTIMS.#ISUPPORTUDAARI

7. And then there are those who don’t appreciate clamping down on freedom of expression
A fundamental right of every citizen of Pakistan that is constitutionally protected, by the way.
Slow claps for #PEMRA because becoming a part of the problem is easier than addressing it #ISupportUdaari

8. The problem of child abuse is an ever growing cause for concern

9. Not dealing with these problems is exactly what is letting them bubble and then turn into mammoth problems for our nation
Like it or not child abuse is a reality in the 'Islamic Republic of Pakistan'.
Raising awareness should not be penalised #ISUPPORTUDAARI— SkinnyCanWrite ✍🇵🇸 (@TwoTwoAlys) May 13, 2016
10. Someone even brought up Hamza Ali Abbasi
Baat toh sahi hai, waise.
I only watched trailer #Udaari It was looking good if #JPNA beach in bikinis wasn't banned why this #IsupportUdaari I want equal treatment
— Sheikh Sahib (@sheikhsahib914) May 14, 2016
11. People even appreciated the people behind Udaari for responding to PEMRA’s notice to start a debate
Good to see team #Udaari speaking up on Pemra issue rather than go in hiding. @Ahsankhanuk @RoshanehZafar @EhteshamuddinM #ISupportUdaari

— RathoreBaba ☢ (@ashalrathore) May 14, 2016
13. And this person just summed the whole problem up beautifully
If only authorities paid as much attention to stopping child abuse as PEMRA did muffling a drama drawing attention to it !#ISupportUdaari
