Haider Ali, long jumper and special needs athlete, has excelled at the Paralympics more than once and we couldn’t be more proud.
In over two decades of participating in the prestigious multi-national event, Haider has been the only athlete from Pakistan to bring back some medals.
Who is Haider Ali?
Haider Ali is an all-around para-athlete who hails from Gujranwala. He suffers from Celebral Palsy which is categorized as a permanent movement syndrome allowing poor coordination between muscles. Despite the physical barriers, Haider bagged a silver medal at the 2008 Summer Paralympics held in China. He also has to his credit two other medals scored at the Asian Para Games in 2010.
What are the Paralympic Games?
The Paralympic Games is a major international multi-sport event for athletes that have physical disabilities. Just like the Olympic Games, there are Winter and Summer Paralympic Games which are held immediately after Olympic Games.
Pakistan’s History at the Paralympic Games
Pakistan itself has been participating in the Paralympic Games since 1992 and has been sending athletes every year since then. In its history at the Paralympic Games, Pakistan has won 2 medals – one bronze medal this year and one silver in 2008. Guess who won the silver medal in 2008? That’s right, your boy Haider Ali.
Haider Ali almost didn’t make it to the games this year since the National Paralympics Committee was having issues funding it’s athletes and the sponsorships weren’t coming in (sadly). Fortunately, the Pakistan Sports Board stepped in and was able to finance the trip for Team Pakistan.
And we’re glad they did 🙂
