Kami Sid, Pakistan’s first transgender model, who’s also an ardent activist, has been making waves for the longest time.
A while back, we heard about Rani, the movie Kami is about to star in.
Kami plays the protagonist in the movie. The story revolves around Rani, a toy seller in Karachi, who happens to find an abandoned child outside an orphanage. Overcome by emotion, she takes the child in and is later made to realize that the child will have to face severe discrimination due to her decision.
The film aims to promote representation for the transgender community in mainstream media.
The idea that a trans character should be played by someone from within the community is being pushed forward. Moreover, the movie will also help Pakistanis see the transgender community through a different lens – perhaps one of empathy this time around.
Well, the first trailer for the movie is finally out and it’s absolutely beautiful.
The trailer sets the tone for the environment the protagonist is in, which is heartbreaking in itself…
…And shows Rani’s rebellious side – one that remains steadfast in the face of external judgments and pressure.
The short film seems to be packed with emotion…
…And sets the tone for what’s about to come next.

The short film looks absolutely stunning so far. We sincerely hope that this helps portray the trans community in a different light than what we’re used to seeing. All the best to the immensely talented team behind Rani.
