“Kahan chale gaye thay aap?” – A worried Zubia anxiously relaying on the phone to Asfandyar

Dialogues, both honeyed and incredibly wrenching, were the sparkling highlight of today’s episode of ‘Yakeen Ka Safar.’ After last week’s incredibly haunting and heavy episode giving truth to Daniyal’s death, this week’s episode was just as intense, albeit in a much different manner; it was a toll on the heart, with the episode knotted in emotion for its protagonists, Asfandyar and Zubia.

Asfandyar and his father Usman visit Daniyal’s grave, in a touching scene as both son and father have a tender moment amidst such recent chaos

Usman lets out an aching sob over the grave of his son, after relaying a heartfelt speech to him during the Bar Council meeting for Daniyal’s duty as the just lawyer. On the way back home, Usman expresses his desire for Asfandyar to get married and asked him what he thought of Zubia.

Lubna asked Zubia for the address of her khaala, indirectly telling Zubia that the Usman family would want nothing more than to see her as their home’s dhulan

It was a calming moment between Lubna and Zubia. Years of aching have taken a toll on Lubna’s health, who has become far frailer in light of her son’s demise. Zubia’s softness is pungent, and her nonchalant nature is very warm. The most embracing moment of the entire episode lies in the following scene, where Zubia and Asfandyar have another lovely little phone call.

Zubia swiftly unravels how she was worried about him while he was away – the moment is unfortunately short-lived because Zubia, who never lets her guard down suddenly finds herself stripped

She cannot unlock herself from the shackles of her past. It haunts her to this very day, and we slowly see her skeletons latch on as she will not allow herself to love. When Asfandyar asks her “tumhe meri fiqar rehti hai, na?” To which she promptly responds “Haan, zahir hai!”

Things take a turn for the worst, and standing ovation must be given to Sajal Ali, who performs this scene to utter perfection

Zubia is uneasy as she walks into Asfandyar’s office. She wants to discuss the two of them, much to Asfandyar’s delight. Zubia isn’t as open as she has been in the past interactions with Asfandyar – she’s far colder, more ruthless and incredibly bitter. Asfandyar outrightly professes his love for Zubia, and his intent to marry her. Zubia barely raises an eyebrow and declines the offer, stating she isn’t ready to wed anyone.

An emergency at the hospital rips the conversation apart – Zubia’s excuse that she isn’t ready for marriage is a facade

Zubia doesn’t feel like she deserves Asfandyar; she cannot move on from her past and has drowned in it, submerging body and soul. It’s heartbreaking, and Asfandyar cannot digest her blunt rejection – if only she would trust him enough to tell him the truth; to tell him why she cannot grow close to anyone, and why she still allows her past to define her so profoundly.

Zubia naturally breaks down afterward, thereby once more welcoming loneliness and suffocation to reign her life

Asfandyar’s declaration of love resonates as Zubia finds it hard to breathe. While there are some who can live, keeping their past contained, there are others like Zubia who have bones built entirely on their past. She’s not only breaking Asfandyar’s heart, but she is also shattering her own.
