Dear Taliban,

In yet another example of your cowardliness, you tried to instill hatred among us.

You made a bold statement after, “you entered Lahore”. But I’m here to tell you, you haven’t entered Lahore, just like you never entered Peshawar. Your bomb do not scare us nor does it divide us.

We’re a city where people fought for love, poetry, music and most of all, freedom from oppressors like you.

We’re a city of Sufis, saints, lovers, poets, free thinkers, and free willed people. Our history contains the likes of Data Ganj Baksh, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Madhu Laal, Bhagat Singh and Saddat Hassan Manto. We’re a city where people fought for love, poetry, music and most of all, freedom from oppressors like you. And in all those battles it was we who won and the oppressor lost. Always.

We are a city that lives and loves to live.

We’re a city of foodies. Our vibrant food streets nestled in the remnants of the Walled City, our “fine dining” street of MM Alam, our gol gappay walay on every park corner and our chai shops in every neighborhood are a testament to our endearing love for food, socializing and socializing over food.

We’re a city that can start dancing in the middle of the road on a busy Monday evening for no apparent reason.

In the melting heat of summers we would jump in the canal to make the most of it. We’re a city that finds reasons to celebrate and be happy. You think your bomb legitimizes your killing of our innocent children? You have never been so wrong, we are a city that makes the most important of our decisions with our hearts, there is a reason why we are called the “zinda dil Lahore”.

All you’ve accomplished today is to make that heart beat faster, louder, which makes us even more united and stronger.

We will continue to fight you. But not with guns, with message of love, peace and music. I am Ahmadi, I am Christian, I am Hindu, I am Sikh, I am Sunni, I am Shia, but most of all I am Lahore and I am Pakistan.

Like always, you lost Taliban and I won.
