Ayesha Chundrigar Foundation – ACF Animal Rescue – has been working tirelessly over the last few years to ensure rehabilitation for stray animals in Karachi. They do amazing work which includes emergency rescuing and treatment of animals who have been injured, harmed, or mistreated by society.

The animals they rescue are given treatment, rehabilitated, and then released in uninhabited areas where they are routinely checked up on and fed.

Over the last 3 years, they have rehabilitated and set free hundreds of stray dogs, who were then released in a far off area across Malir where there are no humans to bother the animals.

However, when the ACF team went to feed the dogs they came across a horrific sight; hundreds of their dogs lay dead.

The dogs had been tied in pairs by their feet so that they couldn’t run away. All of them were not only poisoned but brutally tortured for their bodies had horrible injuries on them. The ACF team believed that the District Municipal Corporations in Karachi (DMC) were responsible for the heinous murders.

ACF has been spending its own resources to vaccinate and neuter these animals so they can be successfully rehabilitated and released. Their program had been running for the past 3 years and they had done a great job in helping hundreds of dogs. However, all of that time, money and effort was destroyed by the ignorance and cruelty of the powers that be.

The dogs were not bothering anyone; there were no humans in the area in the first place. They were all vaccinated and neutered so the fear of rabies or overpopulation was unfounded. And had the people who killed these animals bothered to talk to ACF about it, they could have easily found out these facts.

The good people at ACF have lost a lot of hope. The work they have done tirelessly for the last 3 years has just been destroyed. They put out an appeal for funds and asked for those who could to adopt the dogs who had thankfully survived.

The post by ACF asked everyone to sympathize with the humans who worked at ACF if they couldn’t bring themselves to care about the animals. They said that incidents like these, at such a mass scale, have taken a toll on their mental health.

From what the evidence shows, the killing of these dogs was not a well thought out plan and executed by several people. Just a few people could not have tied together hundreds of dogs and gotten away with it. Whoever was behind this heinous act should be made answerable.

ACF suspects it was one of the many District Municipal Corporation that makes their work much harder than it needs to be. But now, instead of merely creating roadblocks in their work they have actively tried to undo it and sabotage it in the worst way possible.

This incident needs to be addressed and those who perpetrated it need to be made answerable! For too long have animal rights been largely ignored in this country. This incident sheds a light on how the few who care enough about animals are punished for it.
