With numerous challenges ranging from socioeconomic disparities to environmental degradation, conventional approaches have fallen short in finding effective solutions. Recognizing the need for alternatives, SEED Ventures, a renowned sustainability and ecosystem development organization, unveiled its groundbreaking platform, ‘What’s the Alternative,’ during its inaugural event, the ‘EcoSummit.’ Held at the OICC Chamber of Commerce building in Karachi, this thought-provoking gathering brought together industry leaders and corporate heads, igniting inspiration and motivating attendees to take meaningful action. The EcoSummit delved into various topics, exploring the significance of sustainability in today’s world, the consequences of global challenges, and individual and community-level alternatives for a more sustainable future.
Amir Paracha, CEO of Unilever Pakistan, delivered a compelling speech at the event, acknowledging that climate change is no longer a distant concept but a tangible reality affecting people’s lives. Paracha emphasized that, according to analysts, the country faces a potential risk of losing around 18% to 20% of its economic value by 2050 if it fails to control the impact of climate change on its economy. The Neilson IQ study revealed that currently, 69% of people worldwide believe in the reality of climate change, with 61% of Pakistanis expressing their willingness to pay extra for sustainably produced products. Notably, Paracha cited multinational companies like Pepsi, Nestle, and Engro as examples of those effectively reducing their carbon footprint. He also provided several other examples of how companies and small businesses are leaning towards sustainable practices that are ultimately beneficial for the environment. Amir Paracha stressed the need for a shift in mindset, emphasizing that the time to look for sustainable alternatives is now.
During a fireside chat moderated by seasoned journalist Zarrar Khuhro, Khalid Mahmood, MD and CEO of Getz Pharma, underscored the critical role of policymakers in driving sustainability. Mahmood emphasized the need for prompt policy implementation to effectively tackle environmental challenges. He shed light on the hazards posed by pollution and contaminated water and expressed concern over Pakistan’s declining forest cover due to illegal deforestation, a trend deviating from the global norm. Mahmood’s poignant observations served as a reminder of the urgency for sustainable practices and environmental stewardship, urging collective responsibility to address the challenges.
The primary focus of the EcoSummit was to introduce ‘What’s the Alternative,’ a platform set to act as a catalyst for change. Shaista Ayesha, CEO of SEED Ventures, highlighted the significance of making sustainable practices accessible, particularly in Pakistan. The platform centers around environment, wellness, and lifestyle, encouraging individuals and organizations to contribute to a more sustainable future. Ayesha’s words shed light on the multifaceted nature of socioeconomic and environmental challenges. She advocated for alternative approaches, challenging conventional notions and encouraging fiscal and monetary policies that promote equitable wealth distribution for climate resilience in vulnerable communities. Shaista stressed the importance of collaboration and marketing in promoting sustainability efforts, recognizing the value of impact-driven approaches and investment in niche markets. Shaista emphasized the urgency of finding alternatives and fostering innovative thinking to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and create meaningful change.
Furthermore, during the event, both Shaista Ayesha and Amir Paracha emphasized that Pakistan has not effectively marketed its efforts in sustainability. They highlighted the lack of recognition for the positive impacts of organizations adopting sustainable practices. The speakers urged for more focus on showcasing the progress made in sustainability initiatives, shedding light on the good work being done in this regard, and encouraging others to follow suit.
The EcoSummit also featured two insightful panel discussions. The first, titled “Industry Innovation and Infrastructure for a Sustainable Future,” explored novel approaches to industry practices and infrastructure, inspiring attendees to adopt innovative approaches in their respective fields. Tahir Mirza from Hamdard Laboratories and Danish Iqbal from Metro Power Group & Gul Ahmed Energy Group spoke on how they are working towards sustainable practices. Panel 2, “Responsible Consumption and Production,” with CEO of KFC Raza Pirbhai, Shaista Ayesha, CEO of SEED Ventures, and Ziad Bashir, Board Member of Gul Ahmed Textile Ltd. Each panelist emphasized the importance of responsible consumption habits and sustainable production processes. They voiced the significance of responsible consumption and production in driving sustainability forward and spoke on the sustainable practices they have adopted into their own work. Raza Pirbhai ensured that KFC prides itself on its eco-conscious and environmentally friendly practices while Ziad Bashir voiced that Gul Ahmed uses the most sustainable materials for their consumers.
Equipped with valuable insights and practical solutions, attendees departed with a resolute commitment to sustainable choices. SEED Ventures, OICCI, and industry leaders exhibited their dedication while also underscoring the transformative power of collective efforts in driving sustainable impact. A harmonious convergence of diverse perspectives ignited a passion for greener practices that transcend boundaries and industries. With renewed purpose, the event surely made its mark on Pakistan’s journey towards a more sustainable and prosperous future.
