On August 5, 2019 India’s Modi Government arbitrarily repealed Article 370 of its Constitution which allowed Kashmir a special, protected status. This move came after the Indian Government had started heavy deployment of forces, removal of communication and imposition of curfews in Jammu and Kashmir days before this, without any explanation.

Naturally, Pakistan has been leading the international community in speaking against the atrocities being committed by India in Kashmir

With Kashmir region being a contentious issue between Pakistan and India, with both claiming sovereignty over it, it was only natural for Pakistan to react after the Indian Government’s arbitrary change in the special status accorded to Kashmir. Of course, this change in status brought about a complete blackout of international, unbiased press coverage in the region. Therefore the atrocities being committed by Indian forces against the people of Kashmir are going heavily underreported.

While Indian Government is busy ignoring the international outcry against its oppression of Kashmiris, the Indian Supreme Court just notice to the Modi Government for its actions

After a handful of Public Interest Litigation petitions were filed by Indian citizens against their own government for changing the status of Kashmiris and blocking communication in the region, the Indian Supreme Court issued the Government a notice today.

It is being said that a five-member bench led by the Chief Justice of India Rajan Gogoi will hear the petitions together, in October, where the issues of change in special status of Kashmir, its division into two regions – Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, and the communication blockade that has been imposed in the region for weeks will be heard.

This decision has divided the people

While the pro-Modi Government folks are angry at the Supreme Court of India for what they believe is “interference” in matters of the state, those who believe that Indian Government is being fascist toward the Kashmir region are happy about this development.

The Indian Attorney General strongly opposed the issuance of notice by the Supreme Court of India during the proceedings but the Supreme Court shut him down

Attorney General KK Venugopal is said to have disagreed very strongly to the Supreme Court issuing a notice over Kashmir to the Government of India, even exchanging harsh words with the bench. It is said that the bench, led by the Chief Justice of India, responded to his disagreement by saying, “we know what to do, we have passed the order, we are not going to change”.

It is heartening that the Supreme Court of India chose to remain impartial on the matter and might examine India’s arbitrary change in the special status of the disputed territory of Kashmir.
