Kate Downing Khaled, a mother of three, who converted to Islam at the age of 25 is an American woman. She has been rattled by the increasing intolerance in the United States and the world following rising tensions in the Middle East. She decided to speak up against the hateful views that are causing the world to become a difficult place to live in.

She narrates how embracing Islam made her life more organized

“Muslims are my people. I added Islam to my already full life at the end of graduate school in 2007; at the time it was a private realignment of my spiritual self. I had fallen in love with the rhythm of the Qur’an while learning Arabic in undergrad; I was seeking more meditative practice in my world, and Islam had the type of social justice vibe that I was looking for”, said Kate.

Kate is frustrated by how her people are turning against her people

“I’m not okay, and I have a feeling I won’t be okay for a long time. So I’m asking for help. I need you.

My people are turning against *my* people. And because of that I feel angry, sad, betrayed. And scared, not for me, but because I’m raising 3 beautiful boys. And I so desperately want them to grow up feeling affirmed, legitimized and whole.”

She says she feels as much like her “brown, covered sisters” as she is white

The 33 year old Minnesota native met her Bangladeshi Muslim husband, Taqee, in graduate school and has explained that the mixing of both of their families has been an “amazing” experience.

Kate’s post on Facebook got such an overwhelmingly positive response that she could not believe how loving people are

There were all sorts of people who sent love and prayers for Kate and her family.

The international media picked up the story, as well.

Here’s hoping this message of tolerance, acceptance reaches Pakistani hearts as well

Hoping for a day when we can live with a community as diverse as Hindu, Christian, Ahmedi, Punjabi, Sindhi, Balochi, Indian, Syrian, American, White, Brown, Black, Yellow or whatever else they want to call themselves, living together, peacefully.
