I’m often criticized for being far too critical and dismissive regarding our dramas – but it’s only because I expect the absolute best from them (I want them thriving on a global scale). I’ve been following ‘Ranjha Ranjha Kardi’ from the beginning, and I’ve loved it as much as I’ve critiqued it; a controversial rape scene instigated by Bhola kickstarted important discussions regarding mental health in Pakistan and put the show on the map.

Despite a few hiccups, ‘Ranjha Ranjha Kardi’ has undoubtedly tried to talk about mental health with its credible darker undertone.

Bhola raping Noori was something that deterred me from the drama because I disagreed with its execution. I felt Bhola’s condition wasn’t divulged properly, and instead, his mental status was used as an excuse for everything he did; Noori became cold towards him and tried to find an out.

Noori was, until the latest episode, ready to elope with Sahir; but in this episode, we saw a very different Noori.

Yet she has always been fiercely level-headed, in both mind and matter Noori has been a pioneer of sheer valor – and her change of heart in this episode was risky but defiant. After realizing Sahir’s scheming ways, Noori’s moment of clarity arrives as she sets out to save Bhola. Noori was no longer distancing herself from Bhola and was being more affectionate towards him than we’ve ever seen before. She had finally made her decision to stay with him.

An act of marital rape is unacceptable, and I was shocked to see Noori disregard it and return to Bhola.

Perhaps everything Noori experienced in the aftermath is what led her back to him. Noori’s complex relationship with Bhola was always a bit wavey, and far from smooth sailing – and while I disagree with the decision Noori made, others have welcomed it…
