This is an all-you-need-t0-know guide to catch up on ‘Suno Chanda’ just in time for the second season, airing tomorrow.
‘Suno Chanda’ is back tomorrow by arrangement of Ramazan’s first roza in Pakistan, and it’s been a long, steadfast trial for the serial’s fans. While you might be the biggest ‘Suno Chanda’ fan there is, a swift recap of the show so far just to prep you in time for its second season is exactly what you need! And if you aren’t a ‘Suno Chanda’ fan, well, this recap is just for you too!
Before we get down to the actual plot, let’s sum up all the kooky characters of ‘Suno Chanda.’
The show is about a joint-family and how two cousins (Arsal and Ajiya) are forced into an arranged nikkah by the household’s eccentric elders.
Jiya and Arsal protest to the marriage, but they couldn’t really say no because it was their dying grandfather’s literal last wish…Jiya just wants to pursue her studies abroad and has no interest in getting married. Meanwhile, Arsal also has little regard to settling down anytime soon. The boss-bitch of the house is the legendary Bi Jaan (the dying grandfather’s wife), who whips her two sons (Jamshed and Nazakat Ali) into form – along with their respective wives and children.
Jamshed Ali’s wife is Shahana – aka Arsal’s mama. She’s hilarious, crazy and an absolute laugh-fest (watch out for her epic Punjabi dialogues). Nazakat Ali’s wife is Naeema – aka Jiya’s mama. Naeema is more soft-spoken than her sister-in-law but still can be very, VERY overbearing as a mother. (Both Naeema and Shahana HATE each other). Jiya’s younger brother Daniyal, short for DJ is the gossipmonger of the family. You’ll never catch him without his phone and his finger hovering over the video record button to spread gossip about everyone’s shenanigans. Shah Jahan is Bi Jaan’s brother-in-law (and slight love interest). He lives in London with his nephew Sherry and they both return to Pakistan just in time for the wedding. Kinza is the annoying, irrelevant cousin who crushes on Arsal.
Okay, so now that you’ve met everybody, here’s what happens in a nutshell: firstly, all the kids like each other…
Since Arsal and Jiya absolutely despise one another, they’re hellbent on breaking up their nikkah and start plotting ways to end it together. That’s pretty much all that happens throughout season one, with things reaching a pinnacle when Sherry starts to like Jiya, and Kinza likes Arsal – it’s a confusing foursome that has more lows than highs when Arsal and Jiya start developing feelings for each other. It’s Arsal who first starts falling for Jiya after he gets to know that Sherry is majorly crushing on Jiya.
On the other spectrum, you’ve got the elders battling it out for love.
Billo, Bi Jaan’s vibrant niece arrives and stirs trouble as she flirts with other male members of the household. She initially was meant to wed Jamshed, but he married Shahana instead – so naturally, there’s a lot of awkwardness and bitterness with her arrival. After Arsal and Jiya’s scheming becomes successful, Shahana cancels the wedding and starts planning another wedding for Arsal with Kinza. It gets to the point where Jiya and Arsal’s parents forbid their children from speaking to each other and try and persuade them to getting a divorce.
Now that Arsal likes Jiya, he gives everything he has to stop the divorce.
It’s now when things get interesting; Arsal tells Jiya he loves her but she rejects him and says he’s only doing all this because he’s jealous of her wishing to pursue her studies abroad. He dismisses this and tells Jiya that he’ll support her studies – but also not divorce her.
It’s only when Arsal and Jiya get mugged and almost killed – and when Arsal’s bravery shines through – that Jiya starts to develop feelings for him.
From there on Jiya’s pretty much confused about what to do for a few episodes, and decides to tell her best friend Huma about it – DJ captures the whole thing on his phone and shows Arsal. A few hiccups here and there, and some family feuds as a result of everyone finding out that Arsal and Jiya are in love – and we finally get a grand wedding finale.
So there you have it! Are you excited about tomorrow?
