The latest episode of ‘Game of Thrones’ finally showed the fans what they’ve waited 8 seasons to see- a war for Kings Landing. The stage was set for a major war, with Daenerys and her dragons, and also Cersei with the Golden Army.

 

Before the fighting begins, Tyrion keeps saying how Daenerys’ forces should retreat once the bell of surrender is rung at King’s Landing.

He even tells Jaime to make sure that the bell is rung when he takes Cersei and runs away. This emphasis is important since it is clear that some of Daenerys’ team do not want the destruction of Kings Landing. When the attack does finally begin, Kings Landing falls almost immediately and the bell is rung, however, Daenerys suddenly flips and begins the destruction of the city, she doesn’t even let the Red Keep go!

The shock flip has given characters a lot to talk about, resulting in some interesting theories coming up.

One is particularly interesting. According to one Reddit-er, this flip should come as no surprise given all the foreshadowing that has happened over 8 seasons. These are some of the more convincing warnings laid out in this thread.

Season 2, Episode 4: Daenerys says this about her dragons: “When my dragons are grown, we will lay waste to armies and burn cities to the ground.

Season 2, Episode 5: Cersei had this to say about the House Targaryen: “Half the Targaryens went mad, didn’t they? What’s the saying? “Every time a Targaryen is born, the gods flip a coin.”

Season 4, Episode 4: Daenerys executes 163 Meereenese noblemen. In a later episode, we learn some of these men were innocent. Daenerys shows absolutely no regret.

Season 7, Episode 4: Daenerys says to Tyrion at Casterly Rock: “Enough with the clever plans. I have 3 large dragons. I’m going to fly them to the Red Keep”.

Some Reddit-ers are also quoting a George R R Martin approved blog post about Dany. According to this, initially, she uses violence as a means to ‘break chains’, which makes her violence tolerable. When she reaches Westeros, she’s in the fight for herself, for what’s according to her, her ‘right’. ‘This is the tragedy of Dany. She achieved peace and then felt war felt better for her.
