Dina Wadia the daughter of our country’s founder Mohammad Ali Jinnah passed away today at the age of 98, according to reports

Dina  was the only child of Jinnah with his wife Rattanbai Petit or as more commonly known as Ruttie Jinnah. After almost living an entire century  she is no more in this world with many commemorating her loss.

 

She was born on 15 August 1919 in London when Jinnah was visiting the city with his wife

Having born prematurely, her birth you could say was something unexpected when both Jinnah and his wife attending a show at a local theater.

As Stanley Wolper in his book Jinnah of Pakistan writes “Oddly enough, precisely twenty-eight years to the day and hour before the birth of Jinnah’s other offspring, Pakistan”. Her premature arrival was unexpected—her parents were at the theatre, but “were obliged to leave their box hurriedly.”

 

Her relationship with her father was infamously strained because of her interest in marrying a Parsi

Especially when she expressed her interest in marrying Neville Wadia who was a Parsi industrialist. While the Jinnah never disowned his daughter legally, his relationship with her grew distant after the marriage. It was a unique twist of fate considering that when he married Rutee , her parents disowned her.

 

Dina only visited Pakistan twice after the country gained independence

First in 1948 to attend her father’s funeral and the second time to attend a cricket match in Lahore during 2004. She spent most of her time in Mumbai with her husband and children. She had one son named Nusil Wadia from her marriage who then had two sons of his own Ness Wadia and Jehangir Wadia both of whom currently work for their grandfather’s company Wadia Group.
